Men's Soccer Wins Fifth Straight; Scores Twice in Second Half to Beat Sewanee

The Emory University men's soccer team ran its winning streak to five games Monday night, defeating the Sewanee Tigers, 2-0, at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

Seniors Nate Sampson and Matt Engler notched second half tallies to lead the 18th-ranked Eagles to their sixth win of the campaign and the Emory defense recorded its fifth shutout of the year, holding the Tigers to four shots on goal and nine shots total.

Both teams were held scoreless through the opening 45 despite of flurry of action within the first 10 minutes of the game. The Eagles put four shots on target in that period including a golden opportunity on a close header by senior Max Mehlman but his attempt was turned away on a great stop by a Sewanee defender on the goal line.

The Tigers' Connor Dail had Sewanee's best scoring threat of the contest, coming in the eighth minute as he put a shot towards the empty net but a terrific sliding stop by junior Luke Price kept the game scoreless.

The teams settled down with not many scoring chances until Sampson broke through in the 50th minute. Junior Cole Hendricks found senior Ethan Cohen inside the box before Cohen touched it back to Sampson who fired a rocket to upper portion of the net for his second goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 until the 76th minute when Engler reached the scoring column following missed shots by juniors Trey Rielly and Madison Conduah. The first shot in the sequence from Rielly was blocked by a defender with the rebound going to Conduah. He then put a shot towards the goal but was wide, however it went directly to the foot of Engler who was able to gain control and finish from the top of the six.

The Eagles ended the game with a 17-9 margin in attempts with 10 coming in the second half and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks. Both goalkeepers, senior Jack Hudson and Sewanee's JP Furman, corralled four saves on the night.

Emory now begins a three-game UAA swing, starting Sunday afternoon (Oct. 10) with a road matchup against the Washington University Bears. Opening touch from St. Louis is set for 1:30 PM CDT.
