Men's Tennis Defeats Case Western Reserve

The Warriors won six of the nine matches between singles and doubles.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 21 Wayne State University men's tennis team (9-2 overall) started its southern road trip with a victory, defeating Case Western Reserve (9-2 overall) 5-2 on Thursday night at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. 

SINGLES
Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) gave the Warriors their first point of the night, collecting a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. 

Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) wasn't too far behind, posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, giving the Warriors an early 2-1 advantage. 

Dom Spicer (London, England) put the Warriors up 3-1 in the match, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. 

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) eventually clinched the win for the Green and Gold at No. 3 singles, pulling out a 5-7, 6-1, 10-6 win. 

David Pluszczyk (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland) was upended at No. 6 singles, 1-6, 2-6. 

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) battled in his match at No. 4 singles, but he eventually fell, 2-6, 6-7 (6). 

DOUBLES
Playing at No. 1 doubles, Drenth and Grey were strong, recording an 8-5 win. 

The duo of Donovan Nguyen (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica) and Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) also registered a win, defeating their opponent 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. 

Lakeman and Karcz were defeated at No. 2 doubles, 7-8 (5).

"First match in Florida.  Always hot, and always tough.  Outdoors for the first time.  The guys competed really nice.  Great energy.  Niklas (Karcz) clinched it by winning his singles match in a third set tiebreaker," coach Bryan Morrow said. 

UP NEXT
The Warriors will be back in action tomorrow against Rollins.  That match is set to begin at 3 PM in Winter Park, Fla.
