Wellesley Tennis Earns Close 5-4 Victory over NYU

BRONX, N.Y. -- The Wellesley College tennis picked up a 5-4 victory over NYU on Saturday at the Stadium Tennis Center in Bronx, N.Y. The Blue (2-1) earned its second consecutive win.

The Blue got off to a hot start by winning two of the three doubles matches. The first victory of the day came from the duo of seniors Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) in a 8-0 shutout over Jimena Menendez (Miami, Fla.) and Emily Baxter (East Dennis, Mass.). In the No. 3 match, sophomore Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) earned an 8-2 win over Phoebe Su (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Joica Buyse (Izegem, Belgium). The No. 1 doubles match was taken by Carol Plakk (Tallinn, Estonia) and Karina Jensrud (Oslo, Norway) over sophomores Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) in a close 8-7 (7-4) contest.

DeAgazio captured the first singles win for the Blue and her second in a row in a 6-1, 6-0 matchup with Buyse. Alviar followed with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Su in the No. 5 match. NYU would respond by winning the next three singles and to tie the match overall at 4-4. Plakk took down Markwart in the No. 1, Jensrud defeated Mu in the No. 2 match, and Menendez earned a win over Shen in the No. 3 singles. 

With the match all square, Chang and Baxter battled in the No. 4 singles as the deciding match. The first set was sent into a tie breaker with Chang winning a tight 7-5 battle. The senior kept the momentum and won the second set 6-2 and led the Blue to a 5-4 win over NYU.

No. 1: Plakk and Jensurd 8-7 over Alviar and Mu

No. 2: Markwart and Chang 8-0 over Menendez and Baxter

No. 3: Shen and DeAgazio 8-2 over Su and Buyse

Singles:

No. 1: Plakk 6-2, 6-0 over Markwart

No. 2: Jensurd 6-3, 6-2 over Mu

No. 3: Menendez 6-4, 6-0 over Shen

No. 4: Chang 7-5, 6-2 over Baxter

No. 5: Alviar 6-1, 6-2 over Su

No. 6: DeAgazio 6-1, 6-0 over Buyse

The Blue return home for a matchup with Colby College on Saturday, March 12 at 1:00 PM.
