Men’s Soccer: Scots Add Second Shutout in Tie with Washington

ST. PAUL, Minn. – For the second time in three days, the Macalester men's soccer team finished a game tied 0-0, this time against their opponent from Washington University in St. Louis. This result came only two days after tying #3 Chicago in the Scots' season-opener.

The game started with Macalester holding much of the possession, but the team was unable to get a shot off. Later in the half, Washington got more aggressive, getting a shot on goal in the 23rd minute. The Bears would get three more shots off in the half, but the game would remain tied heading into halftime.

The Scots picked up their offensive pressure in the second half and throughout the two overtime periods, creating more chances for themselves and recording 10 total shots. This offense got started with a shot on goal from senior Webster An (Ann Arbor, Mich./Rudolf Steiner School) five minutes into the half, but it was saved by Washington's goalie, Matt Martin.

Macalester got off two additional shots in the 78th minute, but one was blocked and another went wide. Within the last minute of regulation, the Bears had a corner kick opportunity but goalkeeper Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) and the Mac defense held strong forcing overtime.

Each team fired two shots in the first overtime period. The Scots especially gave themselves chances near the end of the frame, having a shot blocked, but also having an opportunity from a corner kick and a free kick.

In the final overtime, Macalester held a 4-1 shot advantage. The Bears' defense did not give in, though, blocking three of those shots with Martin saving the last one.

With the 0-0 tie, Fink records his second shutout of the season, compiling eight saves in the process.

Offensively, senior Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West) was a constant threat for Macalester, recording four shots on the day, two of which were on net.

Macalester will continue their homestand with a non-conference game against UW-Superior on Wednesday, September 4th. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
