Emory Volleyball Wins Twice At Its Invitational

The No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team came away with a pair of Saturday wins at its Invitational.  The Eagles opened with 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-14) triumph over Roanoke before scrapping to a 3-1 verdict (25-15, 25-22, 11-25, 25-22) over No. 7 UW-Whitewater.  Emory stands 22-2 overall this year, 12-0 at the Woodruff PE Center.

The Eagles employed the use of their younger players in the Roanoke contest, with the freshman and sophomore classes accounting for 29 of the squad's 40 kills.  Emory closed the match hitting .310 (40-13—87) compared to the Maroons' mark of .100 (21-13—80).  Senior Sara Carr anchored the win after pacing the Eagles with 11 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Katie Hulme was second on the team with eight kills, hitting .500 in the process, while classmate Kirwan Carey and sophomore Kia Johnson each totaled five successful attack attempts.

Emory enjoyed a hitting advantage against UW-Whitewater, .227 (54-22—141) to .173 (41-19—127), and were led by junior Leah Saunders who pounded out 19 successful attack attempts, her fourth straight and 13th double-figure effort of the year, while registering a torrid hitting effort of .429 (13-1—28). Senior Morgan McKnight also hit .429 on the strength of 13 terminations with just one miscue in 28 swings. Sophomore Tara Martin rounded out the trio of double-digit terminators with 11 kills.  Senior Elyse Thompson helped Emory post a 62-55 advantage in digs with a match-leading 24, her seventh outing of the year with 20 or more. Freshman setter Cassie Srb dished out 45 assists and chipped in 12 digs.

The Eagles complete Invitational play on Sunday with a 1:30 pm affair vs. No. 24 Susquehanna.
