Emory Women's Tennis Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals with Win Over Washington & Lee

The Emory University women's tennis team advanced to its 12th consecutive NCAA Division III Quarterfinals and 29th overall on Sunday defeating Washington and Lee University, 5-0, in the NCAA regional final played on the indoor courts at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

The Eagles made quick work of the Generals on the afternoon, winning the match in under two hours. In doubles, sophomores Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Defne Olcay came away with the 8-2 decision at first doubles to lead off the scoring with sophomore Stephanie Taylor and freshman Christina Watson following at third doubles with the 8-3 margin of victory. Senior Daniela Lopez and freshman Jessica Fatemi completed the doubles sweep at the second position, coming back from a 5-3 deficit to win 8-5.

Gonzalez-Rico began the singles portion of the match with a 6-3, 6-0 decision for her team leading 27th victory of the year before freshman Emma Cartledge clinched the match for the Eagles at fourth singles, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-3 to improve to 22-7 on the year.

When the match was called, Lopez and Olcay held leads in their respective matches with Lopez in front 6-3, 4-1 on court two and Olcay leading 6-2, 4-0 on court three.

The Eagles, winners of five in a row and owners of a 19-3 overall record, will oppose the winner of University of Chicago versus Carleton match in the Round of Eight next Monday, May 20th, at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
