Emory Men's Tennis Defeats Claremont-Mudd-Scripps To Win ITA National Indoor Title

The No. 1-ranked Emory men's tennis team will be bringing the ITA National Championship trophy back to Atlanta after capturing the crown on Sunday with a victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.  The Eagles raised their spring record to 4-0 after landing a 5-3 win over the Stags who suffered their first loss in 10 decisions.

The Eagles came through the doubles portion of the competition with a 2-1 lead in the match. Emory were successful in the first two decisions with sophomore Andrew Esses and senior Hassan Kenaw winning at No. 3 over Daniel Park and Nic Meister, 8-3.  At second doubles, Alec Rabinowitz and Will Wanner accounted for the team's other point following their 8-6 outcome over Jack Katzman and Robert Liu.

In singles, the Stags won at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions to claim a 3-2 advantage. However, sophomore Antonio Mora knotted the score after registering a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 verdict over Katzman at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Mark Sverdlov gave the Eagles a 4-3 edge while inching them closer to the title when he notched a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 against Ian Freer. As was the case in Saturday's semifinals, both of Emory's last two singles matches went into a third set, and it was senior Rex Serituk who came through with the squad's second clinching point in as many days with his come-from-behind 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win over Liu.

Emory has now won nine National Indoor Championships in the 20-year history of the event.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Feb. 29, when they host Cumberlands (Tenn.) in a 2:30 pm start.
