Pioneers Hand NYU First Loss

Dan Woodward (Honeoye) collected five RBI as Alfred State handed NYU their first loss of the season on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers defeated the Violets 8-2 in a contest played at the New York Yankees Spring Training Complex in Tampa, FL.

Woodward got the scoring started in the 2nd when he double to right center to score Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) and Josh Laurie (LeRoy). Woodward scored on a Andy Pichardo (Queens/Academy of American Studies) ground out. NYU scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning but the Pioneers answered back with three more in the 3rd. Nick Geyer (Newburgh Free) had a RBI single and Woodward delivered his second 2-RBI double to make it 6-1.

Danny Doran (Irondequoit) made it 7-1 in the 6th when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Woodward. A sac fly in the 6th by the Violets cut the lead to 7-2 but NYU would not get any closer. Woodward collected his third RBI hit of the game in the 7th, a RBI single to center, to cap the scoring.

Woodward finished 3 for 5 with 5 RBI to pace the Pioneers 11-hit attack. Laurie, Geyer, and Tim Holler (Brewster) each were 2 for 4 on the day.

Andrew Santobuono (Franklin/Unatego) earned his second victory of the season with seven solid innings. He allowed one earned run on five hits while walking three and striking out eight. Garrett Mack (Avon) didn't allow a run in two innings of relief.

The Pioneers improve to 6-6 on the year and have won five of their six games played in Florida during their spring break trip.

The Pioneers and Violets wrap up their two-game series on Saturday with another 4 p.m. contest in Tampa.
