Baseball Takes Series Opener from CMS, 9-3

The Emory University baseball team opened its series with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in winning fashion Friday afternoon, defeating the Stags 9-3 at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Senior Jack Moore was stellar on the mound for the Eagles, tossing six innings on one-run ball to earn his second win in as many starts. Moore struck out six batters in his six frames and allowed the single run on four hits and two walks.

The bottom of the order did bulk of the damage for the Eagles with the eight- and nine-hole hitters combining to drive in five of the team's nine runs. Sophomore Steven Hunt went 2-for-4 with three RBI and freshman Josh Katz drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 day at the plate.

After two scoreless innings from both dugouts, the Eagles opened the scoring in the third as junior Ellis Schwartz scampered home on a wild pitch for the game's first run.

It was the first of five consecutive innings where the Emory offense pushed across at least one run as the team built a 9-1 lead through seven innings. The big inning for the Eagles came in the fifth as they scored four times. Senior Robby Wacker opened the inning with a run-scoring triple before sophomore Tyler McLoughlin brought him home with a sac fly. Later in the inning, Hunt delivered the crushing blow with a two-run double to left center to plate sophomore Jacob Grossman and junior Henry Pelinski.

The Stags started to make things interesting in the ninth as they pushed across two runs off junior Mike Golob as he was in his third inning of relief but senior Kyle Sulkowski entered from the pen and promptly retired the two batters he faced with a ground ball double play and a weak chopper back to the mound to seal the win.

Game two of the three game series is set for 1:00 PM EST Saturday afternoon from Chappell Park.
