No. 13 Tartans Win Road Match at Division I Saint Francis, 5-2

(EDENSBURG, Pa.) - The 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team traveled to Division I Saint Francis University on Saturday, February 29 for an afternoon match. The Tartans earned the doubles point and then went on for a 5-2 victory to move their record to 5-1 for the season.

The second and third doubles pairs for the Tartans each won by tiebreakers with senior Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) and sophomore Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) winning 7-6(5) at the second position and junior Joshua Pinckney (Atlanta, Ga. / The Westminster Schools) and freshman Edward Chen (Boston, Mass. / Shanghai American School) winning 7-6(3) at the third position.

The victories in doubles helped push the Tartans in singles play with Gibson winning first, 6-4, 6-3, at third singles. Junior Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) then won 6-2, 7-6(5) at first singles to make it a 3-0 lead for the Tartans.

The Red Flash then won at second and sixth singles to make it 3-2 just ahead of freshman Raahil Doshi (Singapore, Singapore / Anglo - Chinese School (Independent), Singapore) winning in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at fourth singles for the match win.

Freshman Matthew Poh (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) earned the final point of the day with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win at fifth singles.

The Tartans will next travel to Florida for spring break matches at the USTA Center with play beginning Friday, March 6 against NAIA Cardinal Strich at 3:00 p.m.
