WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team was held to just three runs on four hits after scoring 10 or more in six of their previous seven contests as the Judges dropped a 7-3 decision to visiting Suffolk University today. With the loss, Brandeis falls to 7-3 on the season, while the Rams even their record at 6-6.

Brandeis scored their three runs in the first two innings. Sophomore third baseman Isaac Fossas (Dudley, Mass./Milton Academy) opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first. Classmate DH Scott Ziegler (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) added an RBI double in the second, with the Judges' third run coming home on a wild pitch two batters later.

Suffolk got on the board with singles runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings, twice scoring without a hit. In the third, two Brandeis errors and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Suffolk's Will Hopkins followed with a sacrifice fly. In the fifth, the Rams' Rich Gilbride walked, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a double play ball to cut the visitors' deficit to 3-2. The Rams tied it with two outs in the sixth, as Trevor Lee singled to left, stole second and came home on a single to center by Steven Shamnoski.

Suffolk proved to be opportunistic for their game-winning rally in the seventh. Having gotten past Brandeis starter Greg Tobin (Medway, Mass./Catholic Memorial School), the Rams loaded the bases on two hit batters and a walk by the Brandeis bullpen. A passed ball scored what proved to be the game-winning run, and Suffolk DH Tyler Brigham gave his team some breathing room with a home run to left field, providing the final 7-4 margin.

Meanwhile, Suffolk senior lefty reliever Worth Walrod kept the Brandeis bats – which entered the game hitting .380 as a team – in check. In five innings of work, he allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out eight to earn his first win of the season. Tobin got a no-decision after going six innings and giving up four hits and three runs (two earned). He walked two and struck out four. Judge sophomore Rik Jhamb (Shrewsbury, Mass./Advanced Math and Science Academy) shouldered the loss to fall to 0-1.

Suffolk's Lee was the only multiple hitter in the game, going 2-4 with a run scored, while Ziegler's double and Brigham's home run were the game's only extra-base hits.

Brandeis returns to action on Saturday, kicking off a nine-game road trip with a doubleheader at Salem State starting at noon.
