Mattie Ryan's Home Run Powers Emory Softball to Win Over Trine

The Emory University softball team is one win closer to a berth to the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship series as the Eagles defeated Trine University 2-1 in the College World Series Friday evening in Tyler, Texas.

A two-run home run by freshman Mattie Ryan proved to be the difference as Emory won its fourth straight postseason contest. Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, junior Greta Wilker worked a one-out walk before Ryan deposited the round tripper over the left field fence.

The two runs were all the run support sophomore Madison Schaefer needed as she ran her seasonal record to 20-4. Schaefer surrendered a two-out RBI double to Ashley Swartout in the first inning before posting zeroes for the remainder of the contest. In her seven innings of work, Schaefer allowed just the solo run on three hits and two walks while striking out one.

With the win, the Eagles will be off on Saturday before returning to the field Sunday afternoon at 3:30 PM against an opponent to be determined.
