ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team opened their 2019 schedule with No. 3 ranked University of Chicago, claiming a 0-0 tie at Macalester Stadium on Friday night under the lights.
This was the second year in a row that the Scots have started the year with a tie, as they tied Pacific University 0-0 in their season-opener in 2018.
The game started with the Maroons holding the majority of the possession, but it was Macalester that fired the first shot, as junior
Theo Nsereko (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) took a shot in the fifth minute of play that missed wide. The Scots followed that up with another shot in the 11
th minute that again missed wide.
Chicago held a 10-3 edge in shots after the first half, but neither team was able to score as junior goalie
Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) cleared all four shots that came his way.
Both teams had five shots in the second half, with seniors
Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) and
Alex Foster (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Laboratory) logging shots on goal for the Scots. Fink saved four more shots in the half to force overtime.
The Maroons took four shots in the first overtime period, with only one being on net. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal in the second overtime, ending the game in a 0-0 tie.
With his nine saves on the day, Fink tallied a new career high in net. Moore paced the team offensively, taking two shots in the contest.
The Scots continue their homestand on Sunday when they will face Washington University in St. Louis. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
