Emory Baseball Out-Slugs Covenant, 16-10, in Series Opener

The high-powered Emory University baseball team's offense continued clicking Friday afternoon, out-slugging Covenant College, 16-10, in a high-scoring affair on Lookout Mountain. The Eagles have now won six straight, improving to 7-1 overall while the Scots drop their second in a row to fall to 5-3.

The Eagles reached double digits for the fourth time this season and third time out of the last three contests, belting out 16 runs on 14 hits. Eight members of the starting nine recorded at least one hit with five Eagles racking up multi-hit performances.

Senior Jacob Greene tied his career-high with five RBI on the afternoon, going 2-for-5 with a double, triple and a stolen base. Junior Jacob Singer led both clubs with a three-hit outing, finishing 3-for-6 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Junior Jake Kessinger had one hit in the game, his first career round tripper, as he went 1-for-5 with two RBI.

After falling behind 2-0 after the first inning, the Eagles scored 10 unanswered runs with three coming in the second, two in the third and a five spot in the fourth. Singer had the go-ahead hit in the second with a two-run single, scoring Greene and freshman Jack Masonis. A run-scoring double by junior Caleb Shulman highlighted the Eagles' third frame while two-run doubles from both Greene and classmate Ryan Adelman powered the Emory fourth.

Following a run by the Scots in the home half of the fourth, the Eagles responded with another crooked inning, scoring four times in the fifth to move in front 14-3. Greene brought home Shulman and junior Jack Rubenstein with a triple to right before Kessinger belted his first career tater to left center.

Covenant used the long ball to claw its way back into the game. A two-run home run by Ken Alexander was part of the team's three run fifth before back-to-back jacks by Hunter Christian and Andrew Brock jumpstarted a four-run inning in the seventh, pulling the Scots to within four at 14-10.

The Eagles tacked on insurance runs in both the eighth with a RBI groundout by junior Zack Atlas and in the ninth on a single by Adelman to score junior Michael Edelman.

Sophomore Jack Brodsky pitched into the sixth inning as he earned his second win of the campaign. He struck out five batters in 5.2 innings, allowing a season-high six runs on 10 hits.

Sophomore Dylan Kahn helped stopped the bleeding during Covenant's four-run seventh before giving way to freshman Mike Golob who tossed two scoreless innings to go along with three strikeouts to help the Eagles seal the win.

The two teams now venture to Atlanta to complete the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. The Saturday double-dip is slated to begin at 12:00 PM at Chappell Park.
