Men's Basketball Drops Tough Battle to Chicago

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team hosted Chicago in non-conference action on Wednesday (Nov. 29). The score was tied seven times and the lead changed hands another nine times as the Hornets fell in the close back-and-forth game with the Maroons 67-63.

Chicago built up its largest lead of the night over Kalamazoo within the first five minutes of the contest, leading 12-5. The Hornets scored 10 of the following 12 points to tie the game up halfway through the first half. After K grabbed a 26-23 lead with 4:41 on the clock, the Maroons scored the next nine points to take a 33-27 lead into the half. 

The two teams battled in the first part of half number two, but Kalamazoo eventually regained the lead with the scoreboard reading 45-44 at the 8:52 mark. Chicago captured and pushed the lead back out to seven with 3:35 remaining in the game. The Hornets got the deficit down to three, but the Maroons did just enough to hang to the four-point win.

Kalamazoo shot 43.9% overall compared to Chicago's 43.1%. The Hornets made 7 of 23 (30.4%) three-pointers compared to 8 of 26 (30.8%) by the Maroons. Kalamazoo went 6 of 11 (54.5%) from the free throw line compared to 9 of 13 (69.2%) by Chicago. The Hornets had 34 rebounds compared to the Maroons' 37, while Kalamazoo had nine assists on 25 made field goals.

Gabriel Sharp was the leading scorer for the Hornets off the bench with 16 points on five field goals (one three) and five free throws. Ty Horky contributed 13 points and six rebounds, while Lukas Broadsword had 11 points and eight boards. Carter Bandemer also finished with double-digit points at 10.

Broadsword was the leading rebounder and tied Lucas Hanifan for the most assists at three. Hanifan also contributed two steals defensively. Bobby Samples (9), JJ Stevens (2), and Hanifan (2) rounded out the scoring for the Hornets.

Kalamazoo will be back in action with a road game at #9 Case Western Reserve on Saturday (Dec. 2), beginning at 3 p.m.
