Brandeis Knocks Off Emory Men's Soccer in Overtime, 3-2

The No. 13 ranked Emory University men's soccer team saw its nine-game unbeaten streak snapped Friday night, falling in overtime to Brandeis University, 3-2, in Waltham, MA.

The Judges' Eli Mones netted the decisive game-winner in overtime as Brandeis handed the Eagles their first UAA loss of the season. Emory now stands 8-2-4 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference while the Judges earned their second UAA win to improve to 2-2-1 in the league and 5-7-2 overall.

After being denied the game-winner on a tremendous diving save by senior Jack Hudson moments prior, Mones came through as he was given another opportunity in the 97th minute, scoring on a Michael Burch pass after Mones' initial shot was blocked in front. It was Mones' first career goal as he gave the Eagles their second loss of the season with both defeats coming in overtime.

Senior Nate Sampson appeared to have won the game for Emory in regulation with a late goal in the 77th minute. Sampson fired off a bullet from the top of the 18 that found the bottom right corner for his third goal of the season, putting the Eagles in front 2-1.

However, Brandeis found the equalizer with just over three minutes remaining in the second half as Isaac Mikula made a fantastic run and finish on an assist from Jared Panson.

Senior Charlie Scruton had a chance to win it following the Mikula score but his header attempt was sent away on an outstanding diving stop by Aiden Guthro.

Brandeis' Guthro was the unsung hero of the match as he made a total of 14 saves on the evening including several highlight reel stops, limiting the Eagles to just two goals despite the team leading in the shots department 31-13 and 17-4 in shots on goal.

The Judges were the first to crack the scoring on Friday as Skylah Dias found the back of the net off a Panson pass in the 15th minute. Senior Max Mehlman had the answer for the Eagles though six minutes later, scoring his first of the year on a Scruton pass.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the Eagles now venture to Riverdale, NY to take on the first-place Violets (4-1 UAA). The Eagles stand in fourth place with eight conference points and trail NYU by four points as the teams head into their showdown at 1:30 PM on Sunday.
