WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team got back to its winning ways today as the Judges defeated University Athletic Association rivals New York University, 6-3, on the Rieger Tennis Courts on Senior Day. The 10th-ranked Judges improve to 13-3 on the campaign, while the Violets fall to 4-4.
Brandeis opened strong by sweeping doubles action. The #1 duo of junior David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and sophomore Anupreeth Coramutla (Madison Township, N.J./Phillips Andover) started with an 8-2 win, while rookie Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc./James Madison Memorial) and senior Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) were 8-4 winners at #3. The Judges completed the sweep at #2, where rookie Adam Tzeng (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) teamed with senior Zach Cihlar (Phoenix, Ariz. / Brophy College Prep.) for an 8-4 win to complete the sweep.
The teams split singles matches. Ng dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Lucas Bondi at #4 as NYU got on the board. Coramutla got the Judges within one with a 6-3, 6-2, victory at #2 over Stefan Rodic. NYU picked up its second point at #1 singles when Vishal Walia downed Aizenberg, 6-3, 6-3, to make it 4-2.
The final three matches all came down to three sets. The Judges clinched at #5, when rookie Jeff Chen (Northfield, Ill. / New Trier) bested Rahul Das, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Cihlar earned his final home singles win at #6, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3, over Christian Otero. NYU's Yanik Parsch rallied past Tzeng to close out the scoring, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Brandeis will wrap up its regular season with a non-conference match at MIT next Friday before heading to Florida April 24 through 26 for the UAA Tournament.
