Gorloks Season Ends in NCAA Tournament

The Webster University men's soccer team was back in action this morning when they traveled to Westerville, Ohio, to take on the University of Chicago (Ill.) in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. The Gorloks were defeated by the Maroons by a final score of 3-0 to end their season with an overall record of 18-2-2. With the win, the Maroons will advance to the second round and will face the winner of the afternoon game between Otterbein (Ohio) University and Trine (Ind.) University.

Webster was outshot 14-3 in this one as the Maroons put nine of their shots on target while the Gorloks did not have any. The Maroons also led in the corner count as they finished with 10 corner kicks compared to just two from Webster.

The Gorloks came out in the first half and had a tough time keeping possession in the game. The Maroons applied a heavy amount of pressure to the Gorloks' defense and were able to score their first goal of the game in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead to the contest. The Gorloks picked it up after the goal but they were unable to find the back of the net as the game remained 1-0 at the break.

The second half started similar to the first as the Maroons controlled the possession early. They added a second goal to their lead in the 52nd minute of the game to take a 2-0 lead in the match. They picked up one final goal in the 75th minute and never let the Gorloks back in the game as they punched their ticket to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.

Isaac PearsonAamahn Murvin, and Matt Huster all recorded shots in the game for the Gorloks.

Matt Coffey was in goal today for Webster as he made six saves in the game. He finished the season with a school-record 17 wins on the season.

This marks the end of the 2021 record-breaking season for the Webster University men's soccer team. They finished the year with a program-record 18 wins while winning their sixth SLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament and their ninth SLIAC Regular Season Title. They made it to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament for the sixth time in school history and saw their head coach Mike Seiner win his 100th career game. The team will return to the field next fall.
