Double-Doubles From Martens & Pearce Lead Men's Basketball Past Berry, 90-72

The No. 19 ranked Emory University men's basketball team earned an in-state road victory Sunday afternoon, powering past Berry College by a 90-72 score at The Cage Center in Mount Berry, Georgia.

Junior Cale Martens and sophomore Ben Pearce each notched double-doubles in the win as the Eagles improved to 3-1. The Vikings were led by Chase Elliot's 22 points as they fell to 2-4.

Martens followed up his career-best performance on Tuesday with another impressive showing on Sunday, leading the team with 22 points to go along with a season-best 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double. For Pearce, he doled out a career-high 10 assists and finished second on the team with 16 points for his first-ever double-double.

The Eagles trailed in the early stages of the game, with Berry opening up to a 22-15 advantage until freshman Ethan Fauss rattled off an individual 7-0 run to even the score at 22-22 with 9:12 remaining in the half. From there, the Eagles were able to eventually build a 37-30 lead, their largest of the half, thanks to a three-pointer by Pearce with 3:51 to go before going into the locker room with a 42-37 edge.

Out of the break Emory went on a quick 8-0 run highlighted by three-pointers from Pearce and junior Logan Shanahan as well as dunk from sophomore Jair Knight, forcing Berry to call a timeout trailing 50-37.

The Eagles continued to dominate in the second half, increasing their lead to as many as 22 points at 72-50 with 8:16 left to play, and remained in control as they held an 82-60 lead with 2:53 to go. The Vikings attempted to claw their way back with a 9-0 spurt over the following 55 seconds but another three-pointer from Shanahan squashed any chance of a comeback.

Shanahan recorded 15 points, including 3-for-3 from long range, as he was one of five Eagles to finish in double figures in scoring. Knight added 11 points while junior Albert Fallas contributed 10 points. All nine players that saw the court for the Eagles found their way to the scoring column.

Emory shot 52.8% from the field and went 11-for-27 from beyond the perimeter. The team held Berry to 44.4% shooting as well as 30.0% from three. The Eagles outgained the Vikings 33-26 on the glass and forced 13 turnovers, compared to just six giveaways on their end.

The Eagles will make their official Woodruff PE Center debut this Tuesday, hosting the Sewanee Tigers at 8:00 PM.
