Archer Matches Career-High in Tartans 77-56 Win Over Waynesburg

(PITTSBURGH Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg University on Thursday afternoon in the final home contest for the Tartans of 2019. The Cardinal and Gray defeated the Yellow Jackets, 77-56, to improve to 5-4 overall while Waynesburg moves to 1-8.

Carnegie Mellon ended the game shooting 39.7% from the floor, as Waynesburg shot 37.5%. The home team forced 32 mishaps from the Yellow Jackets that led to 31 points while Carnegie Mellon committed 16 turnovers and Waynesburg only managed to score seven points off them.

Four Tartans scored in double figures with sophomore Emily Archer (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll) leading the way with 16 points off the bench, which matched a career-best for the sophomore. Sophomore Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich.) ended with 13 points while seniors Katharine Higgins (Montclair, N.J.) and Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) both added 10 points in the win.

Carnegie Mellon finished with a season-best 22 steals, as Filiere accounted for a season-high seven. Her seven steals gives her 233 for her career and ranks her third all-time in program history. She needs 43 more to move into second and 49 to become the all-time leader. Weslock and Archer both added five steals for the Tartans, which matched a career-best for Weslock and was a career-high for Archer.

Brook Fuller led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Alli DeLaney added 12 points of the bench for Waynesburg.

Carnegie Mellon closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run and led 20-10. The Tartans then grabbed their largest lead (32-19) of the first half when sophomore Caitlyn Clendenin (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) connected on a pair of foul shots at the 2:42 mark of the second frame. Waynesburg then scored four of the last five points of the quarter and trailed 33-23 at the break.

Waynesburg continued its pressure to start the second half and cut the score to 35-33 with 4:50 to play in the third quarter. Carnegie Mellon answered by scoring the next 13 points and then took a 54-43 lead after three quarters. The Tartans controlled the fourth quarter and led by as many as 22 points before going on for the 77-56 victory.

Carnegie Mellon is off until Sunday, December 29 when it travels to Marietta, Ohio to play in the Marietta College Jim Meagle Holiday Tournament. The Tartans will play the SUNY Canton Kangaroos at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round.
