Women's Tennis Opens Play at Georgia Southern Fall Shootout

The Emory University women's tennis team returned to the courts Friday in Statesboro, competing in the first day of the Georgia Southern Fall Shootout. The Eagles are one of nine programs playing at the weekend's tournament, competing against Georgia Southern, Arkansas State, Florida A&M, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Mercer, SCAD-Savannah and UNC-Asheville.

The Eagles opened the tournament collecting five singles wins and added a 4-1 record in doubles.

In singles, junior Stephanie Taylor, Katie Chang, Sasha Hartje and sophomores Lauren Yoon, Jessica Fatemi notched victories on day one. In the FAYE draw, both Taylor and Yoon advanced via straight sets with Taylor defeating JSU's Alberteau 6-1, 6-3 and Yoon besting SCAD's Lewis 6-1, 6-2. In the ERK draw, Fatemi topped SCAD's Morrissey in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 and in the GUS draw, Chang defeated ASU's Babos 6-0, 6-3. Hartje rounded out the day's singles victors with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over FAMU's Machisa in her match of the Freedom draw.

In doubles play, junior Defne Olcay and sophomore Emma Cartledge advanced in the White draw, beating SCAD's Sukkanha/Weber 7-6 (5). In the GATA draw, both Fatemi/Chang and Taylor/Stephanie Shulman moved on with Fatemi/Chang winning 6-4 over SCAD's Droop/Morrissey and Taylor/Shulman beating KSU's Baker/Reilly 7-6 (5). Hartje and Yoon earned the Eagles' fourth doubles win of the day, coasting past KSU's Castellanos/Phillips by a 6-1 margin.

The GSU Fall Shootout continues on Saturday with matches beginning at 9:00 AM.
