Men's Soccer Nets Four Second Half Goals to Top Piedmont, 5-0

The Emory University men's soccer team turned in a season-high performance in its non-conference finale Sunday night, defeating Piedmont College, 5-0, at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.

The Eagles struck for four in the second half including two off the foot of freshman Joe Beare to top their in-state rival. Emory added goals by juniors Nate Sampson, Josh Berman and senior Corey Levine as the team improved to 8-5-2 overall.

Sampson was the lone Eagle to find the back of the net during the opening stanza, recording his team-leading sixth goal in the 15th minute. Sampson was set up off the beautiful touch pass by sophomore Ethan Cohen following the throw in by freshman Cole Hendricks.

The score remained 1-0 until the 48th minute when Berman netted his first goal of the season. Berman doubled the Emory advantaged as he perfectly executed a header off the corner kick by freshman Matthew Tanzer. Levine went on to make it 3-0 in the 61st minute as he one-timed an excellent crossing pass by freshman Madison Conduah, firing it home to the far post. The goal was Levine's second on the season.

Beare rounded out the scoring on the night, tallying goals three minutes apart late in regulation. In the 81st minute, Beare capitalized on a loose ball by finishing it to the near post and in the 84th, Beare tapped in the rebound right on the goal line following the shot attempt by classmate Zach Kornblum which was saved.

Emory completely controlled every facet of the match, leading 27-2 in total shots, 19-0 in shots on goal and 8-2 in corner kicks.

The Eagles are back at the WoodPEC Friday night as UAA member Brandeis University visits Atlanta in the first of three conference home games to close out the regular season. Kickoff on Friday is slated for 7:30 PM.
