The New York University women's basketball team suffered a 74-65 setback to host Cabrini University on Saturday, November 23, in Radnor, PA.
NYU's record now stands at 4-1, while the host Cavaliers improved to 4-1.
Cabrini jumped out to an early lead, but a three-ball from Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) put NYU ahead 11-10. NYU held onto its lead and finished the first quarter ahead 21-16.
Jenny Walker's (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) two free throws midway through the second quarter put the Violets ahead, 24-22. But, Cabrini followed with a 12-0 run to close out the half and take a 36-24 lead at halftime.
"We played an experienced team on the road and unfortunately weren't able to answer their run in the second quarter," said Head Coach Meg Barber.
The Violets only got as close as 11 points and trailed 51-39 at the end of the third quarter.
Janean Cuffee's (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) jumper with 1:20 left in the game pulled NYU within five points, 64-59. But, the Violets could not cut into the deficit any further in suffering their first defeat of the season.
"We showed resiliency in the final 10 minutes, but just couldn't get the stops we needed down the stretch," Barber explained.
Cuffee led NYU with 24 points, shooting 5-of-12 from beyond the arc. Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) chipped in with 16 points and four steals, while Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) tallied a team-high eight rebounds.
"Being early in the season we are fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from this and prepare for our next opponent," Barber concluded.
The Violets return to the court Wednesday, November 27, when they host Baruch College at the Sportsplex in Manhattan. Tip-off for that contest is set for 1:00pm.
