No. 8 Emory Men's Basketball Wins At Chicago

Junior Matt Davet totaled a game-high 19 points in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a Friday evening win at the University of Chicago.  The No. 8-ranked Eagles raised their overall record to 15-2, 5-1 in the University Athletic Association following an 83-66 decision over the Maroons who fell to 7-10 overall, 2-4 in the league.

Davet closed out the night seven-of-12 from the field, including five-of-eight from three-point range, in chalking up his 12th double-figure scoring effort of the season.  He had plenty of offensive help as junior Lawrence Rowley and Mason Johnson each contributed 14 points, with Johnson sinking six field goals in 10 attempts and Rowley going five-of-10 from the floor and three-of-four from the stripe.  Junior Matt Schner rounded out the Eagles' double-digit scorers with 13 points while tying his career best with 12 rebounds.  It represented Schner's second straight and third double-double of the campaign.

Ahead by a 41-34 count early in the second half, baskets by junior Romin Williams, Johnson and Davet extended Emory's lead to 13 points with just under 16 minutes left in the game.  After the Maroons drew to within nine, an 8-2 Emory spurt that saw Luke Morrison and Davet knock down treys pushed it to a 62-47 cushion with 10:52 left.  Five straight UC points cut its deficit to 10 points, but the Eagles took command by scoring nine of the game's next 11 points to bolt to an insurmountable 71-54 lead with 7:40 left on the clock.  A basket by Schner with 3:50 on the clock capped a 6-0 run that allowed Emory to take its largest lead of the night, 81-61.

For the game Emory shot 47.8 percent (33-of-69) from the field and 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from three-point range.  The Eagles found their shooting eye over the second half, converting 60 percent (18-of-30) of its floor opportunities.  Chicago sank 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the field.  Emory registered 47 rebounds to the Maroons' 33, the 13th time this year it finished with the upper hand in that category.

Emory led the entire first half and took a 39-30 edge into the locker room after the opening 20 minutes of action.  Johnson paced the Eagles' scoring attack with 10 points, hitting four-of-eight field goal attempts and both of his free throw opportunities. Davet chipped in eight points, sinking a pair of triples, while Rowley posted six points.  Emory shot 38.5 percent (15-of-39) from the field compared to UC's 37.5 percent (12-of-32) and enjoyed a 26-20 advantage on the glass, thanks in part to Schner's nine boards.  Holding a 23-19 lead, the Eagles used Davet's two three-pointers and a Schner trey to rattle off a 9-0 spurt, pushing them to a 32-19 margin with 3:43 left.  Back-to-back three-pointers by Brandon Beckman narrowed Chicago's deficit to seven points with 2:18 remaining, but a basket by Stuck with 42 ticks on the clock closed out the scoring for the half.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 2) when it plays at conference leader and No. 11-ranked Washington University (15-2; 6-0 UAA).  Tip for that game is 1:00 pm (EST).
