Senior Caroline Kolski scored the golden goal in double overtime to lift the Emory University women's soccer team to a victory over No.-14 ranked University of Lynchburg Saturday afternoon at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.
Junior Samantha Hilsee played a long volley into the Hornets zone, finding sophomore Arielle Williamson. Williamson beat a Lynchburg defender to the ball before finding an open Kolski at the penalty circle with a turnaround pass. Kolski one-timed the offering past the diving Hornets goalkeeper, to seal the 3-2 double overtime win.
Emory dominated possession over the nationally ranked Hornets, outshooting the visitors by a convincing 37-8 margin. The Eagles came out the gates on a mission, peppering the Hornets' Caitlyn Dorsch with a multitude of shots including 11 shots, seven on goal, within the first 19:27 minutes of game play.
The Eagles finally saw one of their attempts find nylon at the 19:29 mark of the opening half as senior Shivani Beall knocked in the rebound following a header shot by classmate Paige Santee hit the crossbar. Williamson added to the Eagles lead before the break, curving in a free kick at the 23:56 mark.
Emory continued to mount pressure before the first half whistle, ending the half with a 19-2 margin in shots, but went into the break leading by a pair.
Lynchburg did not go quietly, scoring the first of its two second half goals in the 49th minute. A free kick by Monica Beck found Alyssa Rudy through traffic at the top of the box where she was to convert for a goal past sophomore Emma Platt.
The score remained 2-1 until the final minute of regulation where an Emory foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for the Hornets. Amanda Wigboldy was called upon for the attempt and successfully put it past senior Haley Pratt to tie the score at 2-2, sending the game into overtime.
The Eagles held the Hornets without a shot across the 12 minutes of the extra sessions but could not score themselves during the first 10 minutes of overtime, seeing a pair of shots by freshman Kylie Hall drill the crossbar and then blocked by the defense.
But Kolski was able to break through just 1:48 into the second overtime, clinching the upset with the second golden goal of her career.
Emory will be back on the pitch tomorrow beginning at 12:00 PM with another non-conference matchup as the Eagles host Mount St. Joseph University.
