Women's Basketball Completes Classic Sweep

Violets Defeat Stevens 98-77

The New York University women's basketball team won for the second consecutive day at the NYU Tip-Off Classic, defeating the Stevens Institute of Technology 98-77 on Sunday, November 17, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

The Violets (4-0), who defeated Sarah Lawrence College 99-18 on Saturday, trailed early against Sevens (1-2) on Sunday. But, NYU broke a 12-12 tie with the final six points of the first quarter and never trailed again.

Stevens pulled within three midway through the second quarter, but the Violets extended their lead to six points, 43-37, at halftime.

"I thought this was a gritty win, but defensively we have some improvements to make," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "But, we had 25 offensive rebounds which really speaks to the overall effort of everyone on our roster who was on the floor today."

NYU opened the second half with a 12-3 run and never led by less than double digits the rest of the way. The Violets' advantage grew to as many as 20 points in the third and they finished the quarter ahead 73-55.

Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) led all scorers with 33 points. Her double-double also included 10 rebounds to go with six assists and two steals.

Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) scored 22 points, connecting on 9-of-12 shots from the field and on all four of her free throws. She added seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.

"We had two freshmen lead us with five offensive rebounds each which is huge," added Barber. "I really thought the rebounding was the difference in the game today."

Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) contributed 12 rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) finished with 12 points.

Barrett, Shelton and Cuffee were selected to the All-Classic Team, as was Christina Li of Stevens and Kelly Pine of Hartwick College.

"It was fun to be at home this weekend and to have a great home crowd," Barber concluded.

The Violets return to action Saturday, November 23, when the travel to Cabrini University. Tip-off in Randor, PA, is set for 1:00 pm.
