PITTSFORD, NY – It is the nature of soccer that good chances build and build  and goals sometimes come in unusual circumstances.
 
That was the case on Tuesday afternoon when Nazareth College took advantage of a fortunate opportunity in a 1-0 victory against the University of Rochester in a women's soccer match. Nazareth is 6-2-1 overall. Rochester is 5-2-1.
 
Nazareth's Julie Delgatti caused all sorts of problems for the Yellowjacket defense.The Golden Flyers kept pushing the ball down the right side trying to spring her free behind the defense. The match was barely 11 minutes old when Delgatti swept down the right side and crossed the ball in front where Samantha Sansone shot it just past the left post.
 
A minute later, she was back at it, running down the flank and cutting sharply into the box only to be denied on a good save from Emma Campbell.
 
It was Campbell again, this time midway through the half, denying Delgatti on a hard shot at the right post. The match halted briefly after that for a water break with temperatures in the upper 80s.
 
Nazareth broke through in the 24^th minute. A long ball sent Laura Herman down to the left endline. She played a short pass to Delgatti positioned deep inside the crease near the left post. Delgatti kept trying to maneuver around Campbell. When she couldn't find an opening, she backheeled the ball. Campbell had a wide stance so she could move in either direction as quick as possible. With that wide stance, it provided an opening for Delgatti's backheel to slide into the net.
 
Campbell had eight saves in the first half when Nazareth had 16 shots. Nazareth goalkeeper Hannah Miller had three saves on five UR shots in the first half. She finished with five overall.
 
The Yellowjackets did have a couple of chances late in the first half. In the 27^th minute, Shayna Levy came down the right slot and pushed the ball ahead to Hayley Orciuch who shot on the turn and it went past the right post. With eight minutes left in the half, Kerri Eden hit a 22-yard free kick from the left corner of the box that was saved by Miller at the low left post.
 
Madilynne Lee came on at halftime for Campbell. Six minutes after the restart, Delgatti had a shot headed off the line by Sydney Melton. In the ensuing scramble, Jessica Byrnes had a shot from deep inside the crease palmed out by Lee. Melton came up big later in the half when a shot from the left side was deflected by Lee and Melton scrambled it away from the front of goal.
 
Rochester had a chance for an equalizer 10 minutes into the second half. Jorie Freitag pushed a pass into the middle that sent Paige Gloster in alone on Miller. From 12 yards away, Gloster hit a left-footed shot that Campbell had to reverse her direction and dive back to save.
