Women's Soccer Nipped in Opener

Violets Fall 1-0 to Vassar

The New York University Women's Soccer Team returned to the pitch for the first time since 2019, but the home opener resulted in a 1-0 loss to visiting Vassar College on Saturday, September 4, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The game's only goal came at the 54:44 mark and was scored by the Brewers' Jacqueline Morrison. She took a lead pass from Noelle Namba down the left flank and tapped it in from inside the box past NYU goalkeeper Riley Felsher (Pennington, NJ/Princeton Day School)

"Everyone was really excited to be back on the field and compete together," said Head Coach Michele Canning. "We only have five players on the field that I've coached for two years and six players for only four months. In the back, almost every player is new and all of our goalkeepers are brand new. But, we've made a lot of progress quickly despite so few returners and everyone is committed to working hard and making sure we're on the same page."

NYU's Sam March (Glastonbury, CT/Kingswood Oxford School) attempted to even the score at 71:27, but her shot was blocked by Vassar goalkeeper Teresa Zimmer.

Felsher made her collegiate debut in net as the Violets' defense allowed only the one shot. Zimmer made three saves as NYU out-shot Vassar 11-4.

"We had some chances, but couldn't put one away," March said. "But, it was exciting to be together again on our home field. We were down, but kept our energy and urgency on the field and on the bench. We re still in a great place going forward."

March led NYU with four shots.

The Violets return to the pitch this Friday, September 10, when they host Swarthmore College back at Gaelic Park. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
