Tartans Split Action with Oberlin and Ashland

(OBERLIN, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team traveled to Oberlin, Ohio, for two contests against Oberlin and Division II Ashland University. The 14th-ranked Tartans opened the day with a 7-2 win against Oberlin before falling 4-3 to the Eagles of Ashland.

The Tartans earned two of the three doubles points with wins at second and third doubles. The first point of the day was picked up by Oberlin before the Tartans evened the score with an 8-5 win by freshman Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) and sophomore Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley).

Junior Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional ) finished singles play first with a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles to make the score 3-1. Freshman Matthew Poh (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) then won at fourth singles, 7-5, 6-1, ahead of Gibson who secured the match win at third singles with a 7-6, 6-2 win.

Against Ashland, Nottingham and Poh finished doubles first with a 6-2 win at third doubles but Ashland was able to get the doubles point with wins at the first and second positions.

Earning singles wins for the Tartans in the loss was Gibson at third singles, 6-0, 6-3, Poh at fourth singles, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) and sophomore Clark Safran (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School) at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-0.

The Tartans will next host Southern Virginia on Saturday, February 8 at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania, at 2:00 p.m.
