Baseball Opens Season By Gaveling Judges

NORTHBOROUGH, MA: The Anna Maria College baseball team opened their 2022 season with an 8-6 win over visiting Brandeis University on Wednesday evening at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough.

THE BASICS:

HIGHLIGHTS:

• The AMCATS struck first in the bottom of the first inning, as junior outfielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) scored from third off a wild pitch for their first run of the year. Senior third baseman Nick Genatossio (Sutton, MA) later drove in junior designated hitter James Powers (Folsom, CA) off an RBI single to put the home team up 2-0.
• In the bottom of the second, it was again Dunithan exploiting miscues by the Judges, as he scored off a throwing error with two outs to give Anna Maria a 3-0 lead.
• Up 3-2 in the bottom of the third, Genatossio went yard on a solo shot to give the AMCATS a two-run advantage.
• Up 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, senior outfielder Jarrod Marifiote (Framingham, MA) launched a two-run blast over the wall in left-center, powering Anna Maria to a three-run lead.
• In the bottom of the sixth, the AMCATS extended their lead to five off RBI base hits from Powers and freshman first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL). That would proved to be enough to secure a victory.
• Anna Maria sophomore right-handed pitcher Jake Usenia (Uxbridge, MA) picked up the save with two strikeouts in a shutout in the ninth.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will now head to Florida for their spring break trip. They'll be back on the field on Friday when they play Husson in a 3:30 p.m. game.
