Men's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Tie with Covenant

The Emory University men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Covenant College at the Chattanooga Christian School in Chattanooga, TN. The game was the first for the Eagles competitively since November 9, 2019.

It was a defensive battle on the turf as neither team could muster a goal in the season opener for both squads. Senior goalkeeper Jack Hudson made five saves in the shutout while Covenant's Henry Hooks made nine stops.

Despite not finding the back of the Wednesday night, the Eagles still had several strong chances but were denied each time by Hooks.

In the 58th minute, Emory had its first legit scoring threat as senior Ethan Cohen put a header on target but Hooks made the diving save. Two minutes later, Hooks made another great save on a shot by junior Trey Rielly. In the 65th minute, junior Zach Kornblum had a point blank shot but were once again turned away by the Scots keeper.

In the final minutes of regulation, Covenant saw one of its true scoring opportunities as Griffin Felton rifled a shot towards the top right corner but Hudson made a terrific leaping save to keep the game scoreless.

In the extra periods, Emory outshot Covenant 5-2 with only one shot from either team being on goal. Kornblum put a shot towards the center of the net in the first minute of the second overtime but Hooks was able to make the stop on his knees.

Emory returns to Atlanta to face 11th-ranked Washington & Lee University this Friday night in the first game of the 2021 Sonny Carter Invitational. Kickoff from the Woodruff PE Center is slated for 7:00 PM.
