Baseball Takes Two from Maryville to Open Series

The Emory University baseball program won both games of Saturday's doubleheader as the Eagles opened the series with Maryville College at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Emory won a pitcher's duel in the opener as senior Jack Moore outpitched the Scots' Bryce Leonhardt in the 5-2 win. In the second game, Emory scored eight unanswered to earn the 8-3 victory.

Following the sweep, the Eagles improved to 8-6 while Maryville saw its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 6-3. The series concludes Sunday with the finale beginning at 1:00 PM in Atlanta.

Game 1 – Emory 5, Maryville 2

Moore racked up another win on the mound as he improved to 4-0 with a sublime outing that spanned seven frames. Moore allowed two runs (1 ER) on five hits and struck out six batters.

The Scots scored in back-to-back innings to go up 2-0 through three and half before the Eagles got one run back in the home half of the fourth as senior Zeke Diamond scored as Henry Pelinski beat out a double play attempt to reach on the fielder's choice.

The scoring continued in the later innings as the Eagles scored with a RBI single from senior Robby Wacker in the sixth, the first of three straight innings with a run. Two more crossed home plate in the seventh including a Jack Masonis sac fly. Pelinski finished the scoring with another RBI in the eighth, plating Diamond with a ground out.

Moore along with sophomore Derek Livingston and senior Kyle Sulkowski kept Maryville scoreless for the final five innings. Livingston pitched the eighth with the lone runner to reach off him via HBP. In the ninth, Sulkowski collected his first save of the year as he allowed one walk and struck out two.

Game 2 – Emory 8, Maryville 3

The Scots scored in two of their first four innings before the Eagles scored eight straight to win the second game of the double dip.

Trailing 3-0, Emory put up a four spot in the fourth to take the lead with the big hit in the inning coming from freshman Jack Halloran who provided a two-run double.

The Eagles plated three more in the sixth as Masonis had a run-scoring hit before two more runs crossed home thanks to a couple Maryville defensive miscues. Emory tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with a sac fly from sophomore Tyler McLoughlin.

Senior Joey Bock reached the win column for the first time in 2022, giving up three runs in five innings while striking out five. Senior Dylan Kahn and sophomore Zac Schultz retired the next nine batters following Bock's departure prior to Maryville mounting a rally in the ninth.

The first three batters reached base to start the inning, forcing Sulkowski to make his second appearance of the afternoon. Sulkowski was even more dominant in his second outing, striking out all three batters he faced to slam the door on the win.
