WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team got the first career goal from three different players – including two seniors – tonight as the Judges rallied for a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory against University Athletic Association foe Emory on Gordon Field. With the win, the Judges improve to 5-7-2 overall on the season, 2-2-1 in the UAA. The Eagles, ranked #13 in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches, fall to 8-2-4, 2-1-2 UAA.

Brandeis opened the scoring in the 15th minute thanks to senior Skylah Dias (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case). Making his first start of the season and just the third of his career, Dias was on the end of a cross from classmate Jared Panson (West Windsor, N.J./Pennington School) that put him one-on-one with Emory keeper Jack Hudson. Dias blasted the ball inside the near right post for the goal. The assist was Panson's first of the campaign and sixth of his career.

Emory equalized in the 22nd minute off a corner kick. An initial shot was headed by the Eagles' Charlie Scruton and went off the crossbar, but Max Mehlman was there to head home the rebound for his first of the campaign.

The game was scoreless for the next 55 minutes, thanks in large part to some stellar goalkeeping by Brandeis junior Aiden Guthro (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport). Guthro made a series of fantastic saves, including a stretch in the 72nd minute when he denied Nate Sampson, saw an initial rebound go off the post, and then bounced back to stop Alejandro Gomez. Guthro stopped Gomez again in the 77th minute, but after the ensuing corner kick, Emory's Nate Sampson shook free, dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot inside the far right post beyond a diving Guthro. It was Sampson's third of the year.

Down by a goal with less than 15 minutes to go, the Judges pressed the offense, sending defenders forward into the attacking zone. The strategy paid off in the 87th minute when Panson found classmate Isaac Mukala (Malden, Mass./Lawrence Academy) streaking down the right sideline from his right back position. Mukala dribbled into the box, past an Emory defender, and blasted a ball inside the far left post for the equalizer with just 3:40 left in regulation. The two assists marked the second time in his career that Panson was involved in multiple goals in a game for the Judges. Guthro had one more save in regulation, again off a corner kick, allowing the teams to reach overtime.

In the extra session, both goalies made amazing early saves to keep the contest alive. Guthro denied Sampson in the 93rd minute, and Hudson parried a fantastic strike from rookie Eli Mones (Portland, Ore. / Grant) ticketed for the upper 90 in the 96th minute. On the corner kick that followed, Brandeis was able to work the ball around, though Emory defenders claimed the ball went over the end line for a goal kick. Senior Michael Burch (Glastonbury, Conn./Suffield Academy) kept it alive, however, sliding to Mones, who buried the Golden Goal at the 96:37 mark to give the Judges the upset win.

Brandeis prevailed despite getting outshot, 31-13, including 17-4 in shots on goal, but Guthro's amazing career-high 14-save performance – plus one team save – helped keep the Judges alive. Emory owned an 11-4 edge in corner kicks and Brandeis was whistled for 12 fouls to eight for the visitors.

This was the third time in the last four meetings that Brandeis and Emory have gone to overtime, with the Judges having won all three, including 1-0 wins in 2017 and 2018. Overall, the Judges have won six of the last seven meetings between the two sides. The Eagles had also not allowed three goals in a game all season, and allowed two goals only once this year.

Brandeis returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. when they play host to the University of Rochester in a UAA contest. That game will also be the Judges' Senior Day.
