Emory Men's Soccer Handles Carnegie Mellon, 1-0, on Senior Day

The No. 15 ranked Emory University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in University Athletic Association competition, blanking Carnegie Mellon University, 1-0, on Senior Day Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, GA.

Prior to the start of the game, the Eagles recognized their 11-member senior class of Jae Ahn, Josh Berman, Charlie Scruton, Will Tichy, Nate Sampson, Max Mehlman, Matt Engler, Ethan Cohen, Cole Gallagher, Jack Hudson and Daniel SanGiovanni with a special on-field ceremony.

With the win, Emory now stands as the last remaining unbeaten team in the UAA at 2-0-2 (7-1-4 overall) and with Chicago defeating NYU on Sunday, the Eagles sit in second place and trail the first-place Violets (3-1 UAA, 9-3-1 overall) by one point with three conference games remaining. Carnegie Mellon drops to 6-4-3 overall and 0-3-1 in the UAA following the loss.

The first half was a defensive stalemate as neither side could get much going on the offensive side of the ball, heading into the halftime break tied scoreless with both teams recording just one shot on goal each.

However, it was the Eagles that broke through in the second half as Scruton scored in the 53rd minute on a beautiful finish on a header from a pass from junior Trey Rielly. The goal marked the third for Scruton this season with all three coming against UAA foes.

Emory remained staunch on defense across the final 45 minutes, limiting the Tartans to only four shots on goal in the second half. Gallagher and Hudson combined to make five saves as the Eagles registered their seventh shutout of the season.

The Eagles round out the non-conference schedule Wednesday night as they take on in-state foe Piedmont College. Opening touch is scheduled for 7:00 PM in Demorest, GA.
