Late Goal Seals Non-Conference Win for Men's Soccer over Covenant

Junior Nate Sampson's late goal in the second half lifted the Emory University men's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Covenant College Tuesday night at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

Sampson took advantage of a Covenant miscue deep in the Scots zone before firing an off-balanced shot into the far corner of the net to give the Eagles the lead in the 73rd minute which they would not relinquish. The goal was Sampson's team-leading fifth of the season and second that acted as a game-winner.

Junior Cole Gallagher tied a season-high with six saves as the Louisville, KY native and the rest of the Emory backline posted their third cleansheet of 2019 and second of the past three games.

The Eagles narrowly edged out the Scots 13-11 in shots while Covenant had six shots on goal compared to Emory's five.

With the win, Emory will carry a 6-4-1 overall record into Saturday's showdown with the Bears of Washington University. Kickoff from the WoodPEC is scheduled for 1:30 PM or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's game.
