Men's Soccer Earns First Win of Season; Topples Oglethorpe, 2-1

The Emory University men's soccer team earned its first victory of the season Sunday night, defeating crosstown rival Oglethorpe University, 2-1, in Brookhaven.

The win closes out the opening week for the Eagles at 1-0-2 overall while the loss drops the Stormy Petrels to 0-2. Juniors Cole Hendricks and Luke Price provided the offense for the Eagles with senior Jack Hudson making six saves in goal.

Hendricks got the scoring started as he knocked in a Will Tichy offering to put Emory in front at the 30:29 mark. Tichy almost gave Emory a two-goal advantage at 49:09 with a penalty kick opportunity, however OU's Jorge Inzunza came up with the big save.

The Eagles held firm at 1-0 until Oglethorpe found the equalizer at 62:56 as Logan Llano scored off the feed from Fernando Guevara. But Emory responded with the quick answer as Price scored with a far-ranging shot less than a minute later.

With 1:46 remaining in regulation, Hudson preserved the Eagles lead as he made one of his best saves of his Emory career so far, making an incredible diving swat in the bottom corner off a shot that made its way through heavy Emory defensive traffic by OU's Ian Farquhar.

The win is the first for Emory over its crosstown foe since 2016, snapping a three-game losing skid as the Eagles ran their overall record to 32-6-2 against Oglethorpe.

Emory will look to keep its unbeaten streak to start the season intact two weeks from now as No. 3-ranked Calvin University and the University of Lynchburg visit Atlanta on September 17 and 18.
