Haynes delivers overtime dagger to lift Warriors past #15 Yellow Jackets

Box Score

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Having survived advances from the 15th-ranked University of Rochester offense throughout Saturday, Sept. 27, afternoon's game, the Lycoming College men's soccer team turned the tables in overtime and in the 96th minute, sophomore Dom Haynes (Pocono Summit, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) got past the last defender and delivered the final blow as Lycoming posted a 2-1 upset over Rochester on a beautiful day at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Having already fired two shots on goal in the first five minutes of overtime, the Warriors (8-0-2 overall) delivered on their aggressiveness, as freshman Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) delivered a quick flick behind him as a Rochester defender made contact with the ball, sending it to Haynes, who dribbled around the defender and then lifted a shot past the charging keeper, setting off one of the most raucous celebrations in the history of the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The win is the Warriors' first over a ranked opponent since a 1-0 win over No. 23 Elizabethtown on Sept. 23, 2006 and also helped the team stay undefeated through 10 games for the first time in program history.

Both teams played exceptional in the evenly matched game, with both squads taking 10 shots in a clinic in quality defensive soccer, except for one 30-second period in the first half. The Warriors, who have not trailed in a game this year, again took a lead, as freshman Abdullahi Abdi (Seattle, Wash./James Garfield) lifted a corner kick to the far left side of the box, and 6-5 freshman defender Kyle Thomas (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) found the ball and headed it into the right corner.

The Yellow Jackets (5-2-2 overall) answered 30 seconds later, as the Warriors failed to clear a threat in their zone and Jack Thesing drilled a shot into the upper left corner.

The game continued as a tie until Haynes' golden goal, even as Rochester got several quality chances. In the 41st minute, a foul in the Lycoming box gave the Yellow Jackets a penalty kick, but Lycoming's senior goalkeeper Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) dove left and the  ball met him in the chest. As the clock rolled under 10 minutes in regulation, Ben Keeton was able to get a header in the box that forced Keenan to leap and deflect out.

In all, Keenan stopped a season-high six shots to earn the win, while Michael Shatkin stopped five for the Yellow Jackets.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when they head to 2013 Freedom Conference champion King's for a 7 p.m. tilt.
