No. 14 Tartans Win Third Straight, Top No. 26 Denison, 6-3

(YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio) - The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team made it a 2-0 weekend with a 6-3 win against 26th-ranked Denison University Sunday evening after topping 33rd-ranked Swarthmore College on Saturday. The Tartans are now 4-1 for the year while Denison moved to 0-2.

Once sophomore Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) and freshman Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) won in a tiebreaker at third doubles, the Tartans held a 2-1 advantage going into singles play. Gibson and Nottingham won 8-7 (8-4) while junior Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) and senior Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) won 8-3 at second doubles for the two points.

Nottingham was the first to finish singles play when he won 6-2, 6-1 at fifth singles ahead of junior Joshua Pinckney (Atlanta, Ga. / The Westminster Schools) at sixth singles who won 6-3, 6-3 for a 4-1 Tartan lead.

Sophomore Clark Safran (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School) then secured the match win for the Tartans with a 6-3, 6-4 win at fourth singles.

Boppana was the other Tartan to win in singles play when he ended the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win in the first position.

The Tartans will next face Division I Saint Francis University of Pennsylvania on the road on Saturday, February 29 at 3:00 p.m.
