The Emory University Baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Roanoke College at Chappell Park in Atlanta. With the split, the Eagles moved to 6-3 overall while the Maroons improved to 2-3.
Freshman Zeke Diamond supplied the heroics for the home team in the first game of the afternoon, driving in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth for the walk off win. In the night cap, Roanoke saw four pitchers combine to limit the Emory offense to just three hits to earn the split.
Game 1 – Emory 5, Roanoke 4
Diamond helped the Eagles to their second walk off victory in 2019, singling to left center to score senior Jackson Grayson as the winning run. Diamond had strong showing at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Emory once again came from behind in the late innings to set up Diamond's walk off as the Eagles scored twice in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. Grayson tied the ballgame with a single up the middle to plate classmate NJ Kim before Jacob Greene followed later in the frame with a single through the right side to bring home Grayson.
The lead was short lived as RC's Cody Shell homered off freshman Joey Bock in the eighth to tie the game at four.
Diamond and Grayson each collected a game-high three hits, combing for six of the team's 10 base knocks in the game. Grayson added a game-high three runs.
Freshman Jack Brodsky recorded his Division III-leading fourth win of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.
Game 2 – Roanoke 3, Emory 1
The Maroons saw four pitchers combined to hold the Emory offense to just one run on three hits with just one hit coming over the final 7.2 innings of the game.
Grayson and juniors Ryan Adelman and Christopher Stern recorded the Eagles hits in the contest while Stern had the lone RBI, a run scoring groundout in the sixth.
Junior James Robertson went five solid innings in the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out one.
The Eagles will embark on a three-game road swing over the next two weeks, beginning Tuesday night against LaGrange College. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM EST.
