The No. 1-ranked Emory University volleyball team closed out the weekend at its Classic on Saturday with a victory over Sewanee.  The Eagles boosted their record to 3-0 following a 3-1 triumph (26-24, 17-25, 25-18, 25-17) over the Tigers who slipped to 3-1.

Emory closed out the match hitting .254 (49-17—126) compared to Sewanee's mark of .172 (48-26—128).  The Tigers held a 49-45 edge in digs while the Eagles enjoyed a 7-2 cushion in blocks. 

Emory spread out its offensive attack with three players reaching double figures in kills.  Junior Leah Saunders and sophomore Tara Martin tied for the team lead with 13 terminations each, with Martin turning in a .393 (13-2—28) attack percentage while Saunders was at .346 (13-4—26).  In addition, Saunders placed second on the team with nine digs.  Senior Morgan McKnight rounded out the trio with 10 successful attack attempts, her third straight performance of double figures in that category, while adding six digs.  Senior Elyse Thompson led all players with 12 digs while sophomore Roisin O'Dowd bolstered the defensive performance with a match-high four (1-3) blocks.  Freshman setter Cassie Serb dished out 40 assists and chipped in two digs and two block assists.

Saunders was named MVP of the Classic after averaging a team-high 3.82 kills and 2.73 digs over 11 sets of action.  Saunders, who hit a solid .359 (42-14—78) over the weekend, also dished out a squad-best seven service aces.  Joining McKnight on the all-tourney were McKnight and Thompson.

Emory returns to action next Friday and Saturday (Sept. 6-7) when it plays at the Berry National Invitational.
