Tartans Drop First UAA Contest at Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to Case Western Reserve University for the first University Athletic Association (UAA) game of the season on Saturday, January 11. The Spartans won the game 78-51 after shooting 50.0% from the floor with a season-high 13 three-pointers, to move the Tartans record to 7-5 for the year.

Senior Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) led the Tartans with 18 points, moving into ninth place on the all-time scoring list. The senior also had three assists and two steals. Sophomores Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich./Howell) and Emily Archer (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll) each scored seven points.

The Tartans struggled against the Spartans defensive pressure in the first quarter shooting 37.0% from the floor and turning the ball over eight times, one shy of their game total the past two outings. The Spartans turned their defense into offense, scoring 24 points in the quarter on 7-of-14 shooting.

The Tartans were better in the second quarter, making 7-of-15 attempts from the floor, but four more three-pointers by the Spartans (bringing their first half total to seven) helped the home team extend the lead to 20 points by halftime, 43-23.

The Spartans offense couldn't be slowed down in the third quarter and they scored 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting to lead by 38 points at the close of the quarter.

The Spartans were led by Melissa Heath's 13 points off the bench while Alyssa Hyland and Kendall McConico each scored 12 points.

The Tartans will next host 16th-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, January 17 at 6:00 p.m.
