Women's Tennis Sweeps Centre to Advance to ITA National Indoor Semifinals

In the first round of the ITA National Indoors Championship, the Emory University women's tennis team swept Centre 9-0 on Friday morning in Danville, KY.

Emory started the day with three quick doubles matches, giving up just five games total between the three courts. Sophomore Xuanjin Li and senior Emma Cartledge picked up the 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles while senior Christina Watson and sophomore Ana Cristina Perez swept their opponent 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Eliza McPherron and senior Jessica Fatemi handily won in the No. 3 doubles slot, 8-3.

The singles matches were much of the same for the Eagles as the Colonels were unable to take a single set off of any of the Emory women. Fatemi had an impressive showing at No. 5 singles, double-bageling her opponent 6-0, 6-0. The Eagles won in resounding fashion down the line with McPherron at the first position (6-0, 6-2), Cartledge in third position (6-1, 6-0), Perez in fourth position (6-0, 6-2) and junior Alexa Goetz earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. The closest match of the day was played by Watson at No. 2 singles but even she earned a rock-solid 6-1, 6-3 straight set victory over her opponent.

With the win, the Eagles advance to the semifinals of the tournament where they are set to square-off against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tomorrow at 1:00 PM ET back in Danville, KY.
