Fontbonne Softball Suffers Tough Loss Against WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University softball team erased a four-run deficit against WashU, however, the Bears walked it off in the seventh for the 7-6 victory.
How It Happened
The Bears grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first with Tami Wong getting things started with a one out solo homer. Eimear Cunningham added a second RBI on a bases loaded walk.
In the third, the Griffins evened it up with Lexi Becker hitting a two out single to keep the inning going. After an error by the Bears, the Griffins took advantage with Grace Paez hitting a single to left plating Becker to trim the deficit down to one.
Then, Grace Paez stole second and a wild throw by the catcher on the attempted steal allowed Skylar Freeman to score.
The Bears, though plated four runs on six hits in the bottom half of the inning to lead by four. In the fourth, Patience Vandermierden added an RBI sacrifice-fly scoring Grace Harlin, who led off with a single, making it a 6-3 game.
In the fifth, with one on and out one Gracie Morris ripped a double to left center scoring Lilly Jones, who led off with a single, to put them down 6-4. Morris went on to score on a wild pitch later in the inning and the Griffins were now down just one.
In the sixth, the Griffins tied the game on Jones' sacrifice-fly allowing Madison Galczyski to come on home. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bears were able to win it on Ashley Kennedy's solo homer.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Lexi Becker extended her hit streak out to five going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Grace Paez also went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Madison Galczynski had her second multi-hit game on the season going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
- Lilly Jones and Gracie Morris added a hit, an RBI, and a run scored.
- Grace Harlin hit streak reached six after going 1-for-4 with a run scored.
- Mackenzie Williams and Sara Joines added the other hits.
- Reliever Michaela Mason took the tough loss going 3.0 innings out of the pen, allowing one run, and striking out one.
