Late Equalizer Produces 1-1 Tie Versus Union

FAUVER STADIUM – Rochester scored with just over two minutes to play in regulation and emerged with a 1-1 double-overtime against Union College on Saturday afternoon.

The tie keeps the Yellowjackets unbeaten through four games this year (3-0-1). Union was looking for its third win in four tries. The Dutchwomen are 2-1-1 with the loss coming against SUNY Plattsburgh after two shutout victories.

Linsey Giles put Union ahead at 58:48 on a sharp lead pass from Benita Lopez. Rochester applied steady pressure and after numerous forays into the Union defensive third produced a goal. It was scored by Liz Mastoloni with Kerry Eden getting the assist.

The goals were markedly different. Rochester had some early chances at the start of the second half. The Yellowjackets chose to pressure Union in its own end of the field and that produced possession plus a couple of threats at goal.

Union's goal came from the ball flowing out of midfield to Lopez on the left side. She angled diagonally towards the middle and played the ball Crossfield to Giles on the right side. It set up a semi-breakaway. As Giles dribbled in, Rochester goalkeeper Madilynne Lee charged out. Giles reacted quickly, whipping the ball past Lee and into the yawning net for a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets finally got onto the scoreboard at 87:58. Rochester was awarded a free kick about 10 yards over midfield along the right side. Sydney Melton played it long deep into the penalty area on the left side. Union goalie Kelsey Hartsoe (11 saves) could only deflect it. The ball fell at the foot of Eden, She squeezed a shot under Hartsoe that rolled towards the center of the net. Mastoloni raced in and poked it into the goal to equalize.

In the final minute of the first overtime, the Yellowjackets played pinball in the Union zone. Hannah Wadsworth's shot was blocked. The carom came to Pamela Chan, but her rebound try was saved by Hartsoe.

Eden nearly had an equalizer with just over 18 minutes to play. Rochester won a throw-in along the left sideline. Shayna Levy took it and threw it to Eden running towards the near post. Her backheader try struck the left post and bounced away wide.

Union had the best chance in the second OT. Giles dribbled to the top of the area and rolled it past the right post.

Rochester returns to Fauver Stadium on Sunday to face Alfred State at 2 pm.
