(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The 23rd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team faced third-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on the road Friday night, falling in a tightly-contested match, 1-0. The Tartans are now 10-4-1 overall and 3-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Bears improve to 14-1-1 and 5-0.
The Tartans got off the first shot of the game in the 11th minute when defender Nikki Hasson (Torrance, Calif. / California Academy of Mathematics and Science) had an opportunity following a foul but her free kick sailed high.
A minute later, Taylor Cohen was able to give the Bears the lead with a one-timer off a cross from Erin Flynn.
Senior Tara Durstewitz (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) had a shot blocked in the 20th minute before senior Andrea Sipos (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) made a save in the 23rd minute.
Sipos made two saves in the first 10 minutes of the second period to keep the Tartans within striking distance of a tie. In the 80th minute, a header by junior Abby Kuznick (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) was stopped by Emma Greenfield in goal for the Bears.
A corner kick by junior Taylor Cammarata (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope) led to a scoring opportunity for the Tartans but a point-blank range shot by freshman Helena Spencer (Warrenton, Va. / Patriot) was saved by Greenfield in the late seconds of the 87th minute.
The Tartans will next face 12th-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday, November 3 at 10:30 a.m. CT.
