Emory Baseball Falls to #17 Piedmont at Home in Non-Conference Matchup

The Emory University Baseball team fell to No.-17 ranked Piedmont College, 6-2, in a non-conference mid-week matchup Wednesday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Senior Bubby Terp collected a game-high three hits, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Juniors Richard Brereton and Ryan Adelman combined for four hits with Brereton posting a 2-for-5 line with a double and run score and Adelman earning a pair of doubles in a 2-for-3 day to go along with two walks.

What started as a pitching duel between Piedmont's Sam Carpenter and Emory's relief corps of seniors Brian Taggett, Sam Brzowski, junior Michael Leeder, sophomore Christian Bradley and freshman Bryant Wise quickly turned into a 5-1 ballgame in the sixth inning when the Lions were able to capitalize on three Emory defensive miscues to score four runs and break open the game.

After Piedmont tacked on another run in the top of the eighth, the Eagles threatened in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases and bringing the tying run to the on-deck. Closer Matt Vonderschmidt was called upon to record the final two outs and was able to retire sophomore Drew Bartholow with a fly out before striking out senior Thomas Baumgartner.

In the ninth, Adelman plated Terp with a double to deep left field with two outs to bring the deficit to four. However, Vonderschmidt got sophomore Jacob Singer to pop out to short in the next at bat for the final out of the game.

Emory continues its 10-game homestand this weekend as the Eagles begin UAA play with a four-game series against Brandeis University beginning Friday at 3:00 PM. Be sure to check emoryathletics.com for any potential weather related schedule changes.
