Stags Begin 2019 Dual Match Campaign with Sweep of No. 21 Brandeis and HIU

CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis opened dual match play on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, defeating No. 21 Brandeis 8-1, and NAIA opponent Hope International 6-3. Junior Daniel Park (CMC) led the Stags with three wins on the day, playing at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles against Brandeis, and then again at No. 2 doubles against Hope.

CMS earned wins in four of six doubles matches, using five different pairs. Senior Julian Gordy (CMC) and junior Nikolai Paodi (CMC) were the only CMS team to play in both matches, having lost a tough 8-6 decison at No. 1 versus Brandeis, but then bouncing back to erase a 5-7 deficit for an exciting 8-7(4) win against Hope. Park partnered junior Oscar Burney (CMC) at No. 3 doubles against Brandeis, and then sophomore Casey Morris (CMC) at No. 2 against Hope. Both pairs were 8-4 winners.

CMS swept the singles against Brandeis, despite some hard fought matches at all but the top two positions. Morris provided the clinching win at No. 6 singles on his second match point of a close second set tie-break. Sophomore Robert Liu (CMC) closed out the scoring for the Stags with his third-set match tie-break win at No. 3 singles.

Against Hope, the Stags were strongest at the back end of the lineup, with freshmen Ethan Carroll (HMC) and Nic Meister (CMC) earning comfortable straight set wins at No. 6 and No. 5 respectively. Carroll yielded just one game in less than an hour to put CMS up 3-1. After Hope evened the dual match at 3-all with wins at No. 1 and No. 4, Meister completed a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 to give CMS the 4-3 edge. Sophomore Matthew Jacobs (CMC) then clinched the victory with his 7-6(4), 6-2 win at No. 2. Senior Avinash Vemuri (CMC) delivered CMS's sixth and final point at No. 3, after failing to serve out the match at 6-3, 5-3, and then saving two match points at 8-9 and 9-10 in the deciding match tie-break.

Next up for the Stags is the 130th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in La Jolla, where three teams will represent CMS. Then on Sunday March 3, CMS welcomes No. 20 Mary Washington and No. 33 Christopher Newport to the Biszantz Family Tennis Center at 10 AM and 3 PM.
