From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University senior Paul Slota struck out Roger Williams University's Joey Gulino to secure a 12-3 win for Spartans over the Hawks at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina on Thursday. Just minutes later, the NCAA announced the cancellation of their spring championships due to the ongoing pandemic, and the Spartans' 2020 season came to a close.

The bittersweet victory gave the Spartans a 5-5 record for the campaign, while Roger Williams dropped to 5-4 following the loss.

Senior outfielder Noah Mehrle and sophomore outfielder Cole Jarrett each drove in three runs in the game. Jarrett finished the game two-for-three at the plate with three runs scored and a stolen base, while Mehrle tallied a three-for-five performance. Junior catcher Jake Ryan added a two-for-four showing with a double and a solo home run, his fourth of the season and the 15th of his career. First-year second baseman Benjamin Gorski added three hits on the day, and senior first baseman Casey McConihe reached base five times, going two-for-three with three walks, three runs, and an RBI.

First-year right-handed pitcher Sankalp Doshi recorded the first win of his collegiate career, pitching five innings, allowing just one run on three hits and four walks, while striking out four batters. He finished the season with a 1-1 record and a 2.45 ERA.

The Spartans wasted little time taking a lead in the game. Ryan doubled with one out in the inning, and back-to-back singles by Gorski and McConihe gave the team a 1-0 advantage. With two outs and runners on second and third, Jarrett singled to score a pair, and he later came around to score a run of his own on an infield hit by Mehrle, extending the lead to 4-0.

Roger Williams scored a run on a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but Ryan put the Spartans back ahead by four with a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. The Hawks trimmed the lead down to 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. However, the Spartans were able to score three in the top of the seventh, including a pair on a single by Mehrle, and three more in the eighth, including two on a pinch hit single by first-year Flynn Lenahan. Junior Sam Nalli added a pinch hit RBI double in the ninth, putting CWRU in front 12-3.

First-year southpaw Jonathan Simon pitched a pair of scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out a pair. Slota closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning, striking out one batter.
