From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team defeated the John Jay College Bloodhounds 11-0 on Monday, March 9, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets scored seven runs in the home-half of the second inning to put this one away early. The scoring began with a two-run single off the bat of Ford Ladd (Longmont, CO/Niwot). Three more runs crossed the plate as John Jay made a crucial throwing error that allowed NYU to take a 5-0 lead. Grant Berman (Encino, CA/Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks)) followed that up with the Violets' first home of the season, a two-run blast over the center field fence.

NYU closed out its scoring in the third inning, highlighted by a Grant Otto (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Delbarton) solo shot over the right field fence. Berman also stroked a two-RBI single in the third as NYU cruised to its fourth victory of the year.

In total, NYU pounded out 12 hits with Berman, Otto and Alex Cochrane (Seattle, WA/Ingraham) notching multi-hit games. Berman led the Violets with four RBI's.

"Offensively, we put some good at-bats together," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "We also took advantage of some key mistakes on their part."

John Jay tallied only one hit in the contest.

Michael Santorum (Hilton Head Island, SC/IMG Academy) got the win on the mound. In his first start as a Violet, the right hander fanned eight batters in five innings of work. Ashwin Chona (Irvine, CA/Sage Hill) also pitched two innings for NYU, striking out five. Zach Cohen (Corte Madera, CA/Redwood) then made a single-inning appearance, striking out two batters. Nick Argenziano (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest) closed out the game for NYU, pitching the finial inning and also fanning two batters.

"Michael made an impressive first collegiate start tonight," added Kimbler. "When you have pitching like that you always have a chance to win."
