Bears Sweep Hendrix in Season Opener

The No. 8-ranked Washington University in St. Louis baseball team opened the 2020 season with a doubleheader sweep at Hendrix College Saturday in Conway, Ark.

WashU had 17 hits in the 10-0 victory in the opener, and then recorded nine hits in a 7-2 victory in game two.

WashU improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Hendrix fell to 3-6.

Junior Johnny Lamantia went 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener as five Bears had a multi-hit game. Senior Matt Ashbaugh (1-0) picked up the win on the mound allowing four hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched.

Juniors Troy Bauer, Collin Kahal and Sean Robinson, along with sophomore Brendan Hall, each had a pair of hits for WashU. Sophomore Caleb Durbin also drove in three runs from the leadoff spot.

WashU scored in each of the first three innings to jump in front 4-0. Durbin drove in two with a single up the middle in the second. 

The Bears pushed across two runs in the sixth, and then broke the game open by scoring four runs in the sixth. Robinson, Bauer and Lamantia all had RBI doubles in the sixth.

The bullpen of sophomore Matt Lopes (1.1 innings, one hit) and junior Dominick DiCosimo (2.0 innings, three hits) preserved the shutout for WashU.

The pitching staff did not allow an earned run in the game two victory. 

Junior Troy Bauer (1-0) made the start and did not allow a hit in five innings pitched, while sophomore Matt Bauer (2.0 innings, two hits, 4 Ks) and junior Jared Fong (1.0 innings, one hit, 3 Ks) were also strong out of the pen.

WashU struck first in the fourth inning scoring two runs on four hits and took advantage of two Hendrix errors. Durbin led off with a double and then scored on an error, and then Robinson came around to score after a single, stolen base and a throwing error.

Senior John Brinkman singled to right in the sixth to drive in a run, but Hendrix answered back with two unearned runs to trim the WashU lead to 3-2.

WashU scored four runs in the ninth to add some insurance. Durbin singled to left center to drive in two runs and Brinkman added an RBI single to left.

Robinson went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Brinkman (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Durbin (2-for-5, two runs, two RBI) had multi-hit games.
